As the competition between Sony and Microsoft escalates, efforts to secure exclusive game titles have intensified. Both companies are investing heavily in attracting popular titles for their respective platforms. Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass boasts a vast range of exclusive games, but this comes at a significant cost. Recent insights indicate that the tech giant allocates around one billion dollars annually to incentivize third-party developers and publishers, ensuring their games make it onto Xbox Game Pass.

Following the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Microsoft seems to have gained a competitive advantage over its rival. This shift has led numerous gamers to favor Xbox Game Pass, notably because high-demand titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 become accessible on the platform from the very first day of their release. According to recent findings, Microsoft dedicates a yearly budget of one billion dollars to attract third-party titles to Xbox Game Pass.

The company extends substantial upfront payments to smaller publishers, complemented by a share of the subscription revenue, to persuade them to partner with the service. In contrast, Sony has reportedly invested $400 million towards developing a first-person shooter game that has drawn significant criticism. While both companies adhere to different business strategies, it appears Microsoft is forging ahead with smart investments, particularly by collaborating with indie developers.

Though Sony holds several major gaming franchises, Microsoft's focus on cultivating relationships with smaller creators could yield advantageous long-term results. Despite its ambitious spending, Microsoft encountered challenges when attempting to secure Baldur’s Gate 3 for Xbox Game Pass. Documents that surfaced in September 2023 revealed Microsoft’s financial estimations for various titles, disclosing potential costs such as $300 million for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor or $250 million for either Mortal Kombat 1 or Suicide Squad.

Other projections included $50 million for Dying Light 2 and Gotham Knights, and $100 million for Assassin’s Creed Mirage. Intriguingly, the estimate for acquiring Baldur’s Gate 3 stood at $5 million. Unfortunately, this proposal did not come to fruition, resulting in Microsoft being unable to feature this title on its service.

Even with recent price increases for Xbox Game Pass, the platform remains a significant asset for Microsoft, especially with the impending launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 setting an optimistic stage.
